The coolant temperature sensor is an important part of your vehicle that keeps your engine running properly. This particular coolant temp sensor fits most current model VW and Audi models (listed below). It has multiple jobs and can cause a variety of issues when it fails. The first fault code listed below "P1281 - Performance Malfunction in Cooling System" more commonly is related to a bad thermostat. The easiest way to tell if this is your coolant temp sensor or the thermostat is as follows. When thermostats fail on most VW and Audis the cars tend to run too cold instead of overheating. The means even after the car has run for some time the vehicle will not reach proper operating temp. This is because the Tstat is stuck open. If that is not going on with your vehicle then replacing the coolant temp sensor is likely your best solution, as it is usually a simple to install fairly inexpensive.
