Understanding Retrofitting European LED Tail Lights on Your VW MK7

July 27, 2015
|

This is a complete guide on understanding all the details about swapping LED Tail Lights on MK7 Models, including the Golf, GTI and Golf R.  The European LED tail lights are an awesome way to make your MK7 stand out from the rest.  They are subtle and classy, as we know the Europeans get all the good stuff.  While the tail lights themselves physically fit right in, there are plenty of intricacies when it comes to the electrical operation of them.

Plug and Play

When installing the OEM Euro LED tail lights the electrical plugs are pretty much the same.  There is only one modification that will need to be made.  The inner drivers tail light has a small notch that must be removed to allow the plug to go into the light (removing this notch does not affect anything if you want to put the factory lights back).  One this is done you can plug in all four of your LED Lights and they will function flawlessly with not errors.  If you select this method the Amber turn signals will not work, as the factory wiring does not allow it.

Adapter Wiring Harness

If you want your MK7 Euro LED Tail Lights to function completely you will need to change the wiring on your vehicle.  We developed an adapter harness to make this as easy as it can possibly be.  This includes adapters that plug into the inner and outer taillights.  You also will need to run wires from the inner to the out tail light and the outer to inner.  This must be done on both sides and is the only way to make the able turn signals operate.  See below for our harness installation video.  Once you have installed your harness you will then need to perform coding (instructions included with harness) to make everything operate properly.

Important note- If you are installing the harness and taking it to someone else to perform the coding you should install the harness then leave the adapters unplugged from the car.  Using the adapter harness changes the wiring around on your vehicle and the coding must be performed to ensure all functions work properly.   You can drive with the tail lights plugged into the factory wiring (shown above) then plug in the harness once the coding has been done.  You should always check the operation of your LED Tail Lights after the coding has been performed.  If you are looking to turn down the brightness of your LED tail lights in the running position a VW enthusiast made this video to show you how to do so HERE.  See the below video for operation with the DAP MK7 LED Taillight Harness

Rear Fog Lights

mk7 rear fog banner

If you have Euro LED taillights with rear fog lights you might be interested in activating the rear fog light assembly on you lights.  This is a fairly simple process which we offer a wiring option.  The wire option we offer includes coding info and a diagram as to what pins you will need to add the wire to.  NOTE This wire is only intended to be used with our LED Tail Light Adapter Harness

How long would this take for the complete install?

If you are performing this install 3-4 hours should likely be around how long this complete install will take.  That includes Tailights, Harness Install and Vag Com Coding.  If you are having a shop install these for you 3-4 hours labor should be a pretty close estimate for them.  Labor rates will vary and this job is best suited for VW and Audi Specialist shops in your area.  Most VW dealers would not have any interest in an install like this.

How do you code the tail lights after you put in the wiring harness? Is there an adapter that you plug in, and if so can you give me a link so I can buy it.

    Thanks!

    • Paul Barrett
      |

There are links to the coding in the harness and tail lights. We also include more detailed info with the harnesses.

Hey, can you please tell me the aesthetic differences between having and not having the fog light option installed?

    • Paul Barrett
      |

The MK7 LED Tail Lights are the same visually with and without the rear fog lights. Just a matter of if you have the ability to activate it.

      • Jason Noh
        |

Sorry, I meant to ask the differences between having the rear fog light turned on and having it turned off. Thanks.

          |

It would just be the rear fog light on or off

Paul I just purchased the OEM LED tail lights with wire harness from you guys. Today I just plugged them in and they look great! I plan on installing the harnesses next week and I’m thinking of ordering the fog light harness to install since I’m going to have everything apart might as well run the extra wire. Did you activate the rear fog on your white GTI? If so do you have pictures you can share of the car with the fog light on? I looked online and can’t find any pics. Thanks for the prompt delivery and excellent job on the packaging.

Im sorry we did not activate our rear fog permanently only for testing.

How do the hazards look with no wiring or coding?

    • Paul Barrett
      |

the will look just like the turn signals in the video that shows the plug and play no coding operation.

    Paul,
My plug for the tailight is different then in the video. It looks like the red tad is facing the quarter panel making it impossible come out.

    • Paul Barrett

They often fact this direction on the original light. It makes it tough to get out but its still possible.

The harness included with 5GG-998-208-H includes the necessary wiring for the fog light functionality? All I need to do is add the switch and code? How different are these compared to the stock tail lights on the Golf R, color difference specifically?

    Thanks!

    • Paul Barrett
      |

The rear fog wire is an additional part that will need to be added. The link to that wire is below. The all red lights would be slightly lighter in color than the factory halogen lights.

      Hi Manny,
Did you bought the Wire for the Fog Light ?
      Thanks

Is that led tail light compatible with the golf variant 2015? Thanks

    Hi Paul,
Are the lights you installed in the video the cherry red or the darker tinted (R) lights?
    Thank you.

    • Paul Barrett
      |

The ones installed originally are the tinted version. We now have the Bright Red ones on the car now.

    paul,
please help me understand the subtle difference between the bright red and cherry red. i assume the tinted came standard on the euro spec r, but what came as standard for the gti, bright or cherry?

    • danny
      |

      …nevermind. chinese market, got it.

    • Paul Barrett
      |

Yes they Bright red are the Chinese market OEM lights. The Cherry Red have a tinted outer portion and would be found on a Euro GTI and the Tinted would be found on the Euro R.

        |

        paul,
thank you for the clarification. in your experience with vw/audi, do you have any recommendations for a “value” oriented vag com coding connector. so far google keeps directing me towards ross-tech. i’m a weekend warrior, not a professional. thoughts?
        danny

        • Paul Barrett
          |

Ross Tech is the only company that makes VagCom, any other cable about be a knock off.

    • Jorge

If you are in Mexico City you can purchase the Cherry Red GTI LEDs tail lights , Mexican GTI uses the same as the Euro version.

Mexican VW dealership do not carry R Tail lights cause there is no R there.

A question for just installing the euro spec tinted tail lights for the Golf R, i understand that the amber signals do not work left or right? if we are just doing plug and play with no wiring

What about when turing all the amber lights for parking, all 4 lights blinking, do the amber work in this case? Like what do i see if i pressed the traingle button

    Thanks

    • Paul Barrett
      |

The ambers would not work under any circumstance as they essentially are not wired to do anything. That is why the harness is needed

    Hi Paul,

I’d like to order the “MK7 European Tinted LED Tail Lights with Rear Fog and Adapter Harness” but I’m getting the following error on checkout:
“Sorry, no quotes are available for this order at this time.”
I’m trying to ship to Canada…any help is appreciated…thanks.

    • Paul Barrett
      |

Sorry we are having an issue with Canadian shipping right now. I have sent a manual invoice via email to place your order.

Hey Paul….quick question….you mentioned there is a notch that needs to be removed or sanded down on the inner taillight connector to be able to plug it in these European lights. Does removing that notch mean the connector will no longer plug-in to the original North American taillights (if for any reason I need to go back to them)? Or is the connector still compatible with both types of taillights even after removing that notch? Thanks in advance…

    • Paul Barrett
      |

This would work with both types of lights. It doesnt affect your ability to go back to stock.

Im sorry since this is a non US model we cant offer much on this.

    Hello Paul,
I have a 2015 VW GTI which I purchased in the US. The car was assembled in Mexico. In late 2015, I moved to France and brought the car with me. Since coming to France I have been struggling to have my VW conform with French regulations. I have front fog lights but the French also require a rear fog light which has been successfully installed. The main problem that I now have is that It is illegal to have red turn signals in France; turn signal lights have to be orange. A VW dealership was not able to complete this conversion after keeping the car for over a month. Apparntly, none of the coding provided by VW has worked for the new European light assembly which has been installed. The most that was accomplished was that the turn signals will work once displaying the orange color and then will revert back to the red color.
I don’t have as much confidence in European techs as they do not appear to be as savvy as in the US. Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks for your time,
    Pat Idiart

    Good Evening,

would these lights retro-fit my rear fog lights i have on my golf gti 7? or would i lose them, or does it have to be re-coded?
    Cheers

Are the red led tail lights chinese made for vw. Do they have a warranty from defects on them. Also are the lights have guaranteed fitment.

    • Paul Barrett
      |

Yes they are the Chinese OEM parts. They have a 1 year warranty and should not have any fitment issues

    Hi Paul,

Is there’s a way to replace the LED tail lights without cutting the material?

    Thanks!

    Hey Paul!
Love the harness, and after the OBD11 arrived, the coding was a breeze, the lights are magical!! Question though, my ex-VW Technician buddy said some Euro models have a feature where the lights give off a dim LED marker on each tail light, specifically the outer one. So I coded them, everything works as planned, but as I was putting her to bed in the garage as the sun was setting I noticed a dim red glow from where the outer C-shaped red LEDs are and the clear amber “line” meet. Where they crossed paths, in the clear line portion there was a faint but noticeable red glow. Is this some sort of low voltage parking feature so your car is noticeable from the rear?? Call me crazy, but tonight I’ll take a pic. Email me if you have no idea what I’m talking about and I’ll send you the pic. I looked in a couple forums last night, and didn’t find much on the topic… keep up the awesome work Paul!! -Kevin

    • Paul Barrett
      |

I have not heard of any glow in park. Its possible its some residual voltage. My assumption is it doesnt last long if thats the case.

What are all do I need to purchase to install the Euro LED taillights with the amber and fog lights working?
