Your Volkswagen Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors (TPMS)

There are various TPMS systems used to monitor the tire pressures on VW’s.  There are 2 basic designs one that uses a tire pressure sensor mounted inside your wheel and tire, and the other uses the wheel speed sensors in the Anti-lock Brake System(ABS).

The earlier versions of VW TPMS  used the sensors placed in each wheel.  Each of those sensors would transmit a signal wirelessly to an antenna and module which communicates with the vehicle.   These sensors are all mounted in the same fashion.  The tire pressure sensors are integrated into the valve stem of each wheel (the valve stem is the area where you fill the tires up with air).  Each sensor has a valve stem that is threaded all the way up, and a nut which can be seen on the outside of your wheel. The sensors on your VW model have a rubber and aluminum crush gasket which seals the air inside the wheel.  This is a one time use gasket and must be replaced in the event you remove the sensors for any reason.  Volkswagen offers a repair kit that can be replaced in the event you remove a sensor. The sensor seal kit 1K0-998-275 is $25.60 per kit.   This kit will replace components for one sensor only.  You must purchase 4 of these if you are installing your tire pressure sensors on new wheels.  Often times this may not be cost effective as you have options to purchase tire pressure sensors for reasonable rates now.

The part number for the most common sensor is 1K0-907-253-D.  This however is not the part number you will find on the actual sensor.  The casting number found on this TPMS will be 1K0907255C. The price that you will find for this sensor at a VW dealer would be$90.00 per sensor.  Deutsche Auto Parts offers the very same sensor for $32.48 for one, or $129.95 for a set of four new genuine tire pressure sensors.

Below you will find other VW TPMS Sensors which are less common than the one pictured above.

2011> Volkswagen CC part number 3AA-907-275-B this is the sensors only the valve stem is sold separately.  Valve stem part number 4D0-601-361

Early Volkswagen Touareg   Part number 7L0-907-275-B this is the sensors only the valve stem is sold separately.  Valve stem part number 4D0-601-361

Later Volkswagen Touareg   Part number 4F0-907-275-D this is the sensors only the valve stem is sold separately.  Valve stem part number 4D0-601-361

The models listed below all use 1K0-907-253-D which includes the valve stem

TPMS for Jetta 2005 – 2006 – 2007 – 2008 – 2009 – 2010

TPMS for  VW Sportwagen 2006 – 2007 – 2008 – 2009 – 2010

TPMS for  VW Passat 2006 – 2007 – 2008 – 2009 – 2010

TPMS for  VW GTI  2006 – 2007 – 2008– 2009 – 2010

TPMS for  VW CC 2009-2010- some 2011 models

TPMS for  VW Rabbit 2006 – 2007 – 2008 – 2009

TPMS for  VW EOS 2007 – 2008 – 2009 – 2010

TPMS for  VW Tiguan 2009 – 2010

For all models 2011 and up they no longer use Pressure sensors mounted inside the wheel and tires. The vehicle uses the ABS wheel speed sensor to determine the rolling diameter of the tire.  From this measurement the system can determine if one of the tires is low.
