The coolant temperature sensor is an important part of your vehicle that keeps your engine running properly. This particular coolant temp sensor fits most current model VW and Audi models (listed below). It has multiple jobs and can cause a variety of issues when it fails. The first fault code listed below "P1281 - Performance Malfunction in Cooling System" more commonly is related to a bad thermostat. The easiest way to tell if this is your coolant temp sensor or the thermostat is as follows. When thermostats fail on most VW and Audi's the cars tend to run too cold instead of overheating. The means even after the car has run for some time the vehicle will not reach proper operating temp. This is because the Tstat is stuck open. If that is not going on with your vehicle then replacing the coolant temp sensor is likely your best solution, as it is usually a simple to install fairly inexpensive.
Its also important to note on this part there have been a few revisions and you will want to be sure that you have the newest revision in your car. The oldest coolant temp sensors were black and you should consider replacing this even if you do not have any issues yet. The black sensors will almost certainly fail. If you have a green coolant temp sensor and you have any of the symptoms below you should not hesitate to install a new OEM coolant temp sensor. This will ensure that you have a known good sensor in the vehicle.
