A downpipe is an exhaust component on turbocharged vehicles that transports gases from the turbocharger to the catalytic converter and then out through the exhaust pipe. In particular, this piece governs the amount of gas that passes between the turbocharger and the rest of the exhaust, and factory downpipes tend to strictly limit the gas flow, impeding performance and holding back coveted horsepower.
The VW MK7 GTI and Audi A3 8V’s stock downpipe is particularly restrictive, and changing it out for a higher-flow downpipe like the Unitronic 3” Performance downpipe can coax out an additional 27 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque (different downpipes will provide variable performance increases).
What should I know about switching downpipes on my MK7?
When switching to an aftermarket downpipe, Stage 2 ECU tuning software is often required to ensure that the turbocharger and the rest of the exhaust system can handle the new flow of gases effectively. With a Stage 2 tune and matching downpipe installed, your Mk7 GTI or Audi A3 will see performance gains of roughly 127 horsepower and 111 lb-ft of torque.
Please note that modifying one's exhaust system is not legal in all 50 states. Refer to your state’s emissions and noise laws before making changes to any part of your vehicle’s exhaust.
