A downpipe is the component of a turbocharged vehicle’s exhaust system that governs the amount of exhaust gas that can pass between the turbine housing and catalytic converter before it is expelled out through the exhaust pipe. Because factory downpipes tend to restrict the amount of exhaust gas more than they need to, an easy way to gain horsepower (and a louder exhaust note) is to swap out your car’s downpipe for a freer-flowing performance one.
The VW MK7 Golf R and Audi S3’s stock downpipe’s restrictive nature means you’re missing out on an extra 27 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque (depending on the performance pipe you go with). A Stage 2 ECU flash is typically required to accompany a new downpipe, but these modifications will net you around 105 extra horsepower and 88 lb-ft of additional torque in total.
Please note that modifying one's exhaust system is not legal in all 50 states. Refer to your state’s emissions and noise laws before making changes to any part of your vehicle’s exhaust.
