The stock headlights that come on the MK7 (2015-2017) Golf and Golf GTI vary depending on whether the vehicle is optioned with the Lighting Package (LP) or not. The base, non-LP MK7 gets halogen headlights that many VW enthusiasts feel are not aesthetically-appealing. The LP-equipped GTI gets Bi-Xenon HID headlights featuring a different Daytime Running Light (DRL) design, with double LED L-shaped lights that many feel are quintessential to the look of the MK7. However, only half of the “Ls” light up on these Golfs and GTIs (the inner two Ls are dummy lights and cannot function), with the full set lighting up only on the top-tier MK7 Golf R. What’s a front-wheel drive MK7 owner to do?
If your Golf or GTI came with the base halogen headlights and/or you want the full MK7 DRL experience, fear not, because a multitude of aftermarket manufacturers offer Golf R-style headlights that are essentially plug-and-play for halogen-equipped models.
What headlight bulbs should I use in my new LED DRL headlights?
For halogen-equipped cars, the halogen bulbs can simply be swapped over to the new headlights if desired. If you would like to upgrade to an HID setup, additional headlight modification will be required. Please refer to this video tutorial for more information on Bi-Xenon conversions.
