Volkswagen Atlas 3.6L V6 Water Pump - Where they Leak and How to Replace

The Volkswagen Atlas, produced in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 offers a 3.6L V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is available with both front-wheel drive (FWD) and Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrain options. In 2020, the Atlas received a facelift with updated styling, retaining the 3.6L V6 engine.

The water pump on the 3.6L V6 engine is an essential component of the cooling system, responsible for circulating coolant to maintain optimal engine temperature. While failures are less common compared to the 2.0T, it is still important to inspect and replace the water pump if any issues arise to prevent overheating and potential engine damage.

3.6L V6 VW Atlas Water Pump Problems

The water pump on the 3.6L V6 (VR6) Atlas is located on the passenger side of the engine.  This part is driven by the serpentine belt of your engine.  If you open the hood and stand on the passenger side of the car you should be able to look down at your serpentine belt to locate the water pump pulley.  It is located behind the alternator, and has a pulley with 3 mounting bolts on it.

  1. Coolant Leaks
The most common way that the 3.6 V6 Atlas water pump fails is due to leaks.  This will generally leak out of the water pump itself.  In many cases the bearings fail in the waterpump, causing a leak from the main drive for the pump.  Regardless of where your leak is coming from
  2. Overheating

Overheating is possible if you have a water pump failure, but this is generally not how this part will fail.  It is important to note, that if you run your vehicle low on coolant this is a possible outcome.  If your Atlas temp gauge moves past the middle you should not continue to drive an over heating car.

  1. Fault Codes
The V6 Atlas is generally not going to throw faults in the engine computer when it is bad. You will likely get low coolant warnings, and potentially see a puddle under the passenger side of your Atlas engine on the ground.

How to Replace your 3.6 V6 Atlas Water Pump

The waterpump it not terribly hard to replace on the V6 Atlas, but again this depends on the tools you have and your experience working on cars.

To do this job you will want to

  • Drain your coolant
  • Remove your serpentine belt
  • Get a floor jack under the engine
  • Remove Engine Mount
  • Lower engine down until you can access the pump
  • Remove the water pump
  • Reinstall in reverse order

Proper maintenance of your VW Atlas's cooling system is crucial for the overall health and longevity of your vehicle. Being proactive in inspecting and replacing the water pump when necessary, can prevent more severe issues like overheating and engine damage. If you notice signs of a failing water pump, such as coolant leaks or low coolant warnings, address them immediately to keep your Atlas running smoothly. Whether you choose to tackle the replacement as a DIY project or have it done by a professional, taking care of your water pump is essential for keeping your Atlas in top condition for years to come.
