The MK8 GTI was built on the MQB platform. While the exterior shape and look of the MK8 GTI is different a lot of what is underneath we suspected would be the same. Below you will find comparisons between the MK7 GTI/ Golf R, and the MK8 GTI.
The MQB chassis was really a concept to make a chassis of a vehicle that was modular. This brings down manufacturing costs, but also makes it possible to build a variety of cars all on the same platform. They accomplish this by adding or subtracting components to the chassis, which make much larger vehicles plossible. The MQB chassis is not just the platform for the MK7 and MK8 models. It is also used on models like the Audi A3, the MK3 Audi TT, VW Arteon, Tiguan, Golf Wagon, and even the much larger Atlas.
To determine what parts are the same, and what are different, we are using the criteria of part number. When we say a part is the same, what we mean is that they are identical parts used. This means both models use the same part number. When a part number on a MK8 is different, it doesnt mean its not able to be used on a MK7. It does mean that without actually attempting to install the part, you will not know what modifications (if any) would be required to make this function on the vehicle properly.
MK7 vs MK8 GTI.... are they the Same?
We have a spreadsheet below with the data covered in this video, but in case you are a visual learner, or just want to be entertained... the video below is for you.
Which MK8 Parts work on MK7s?
In this video we swapped parts that we know are different in the MK8 GTI and install them into a MK7. We also installed MK7 parts into our MK8 GTI just to see how it would work. This included parts like seats, engine covers, steering wheels, subwoofers and more.
MK7 - MK8 GTI Cross Reference Guide
All of the part numbers in the MK8 GTI part column are looked up as per US model VINs at the time of launch. Part numbers may change over time, so keep in mind on later production MK8 GTI models its possible that there is some variablility possible. We also have linked relevant upgraded parts on the right hand side to make it easy to shop for parts for your MK7 or MK8 model.

Hi Paul,
Do you think it is a question of time to see the swap-retrofit of the mk8 engines and rear torque splitter into mk7 cars ..?
Im reading your mk8 vs mk7 similar parts and video after
Thanks!
