This lower timing cover would often be replaced whenever removed, to prevent future oil leaks. The lower timing cover uses RTV to seal it against the engine block on your 1.8t/2.0t engine. When this cover is remove it can often get bent during the removal process.
To ensure that your timing cover does not leak, most shops (including ours) would replace with a new cover. This would give a clean, flat mating surface for reinstallation.
