A leaking valve cover (also commonly referred to as the cam cage / cam cradle) is very common on older vehicles and is the one of most common causes of the leaking water pumps that plague the 2.0T TSI engines. The oil leaks down the front of the engine from the valve cover and soaks the water pump. This oil leak eventually causes the gasket for the water pump to swell, which leads to leaks and can even crack the plastic housing on the water pump!
