Thermostat and Water pump Assemblies are the most common issue on MQB 1.8t and 2.0t engines. The most common symptom of a bad thermostat assembly would be low coolant level. As this unit is leaking we would expect you to get low coolant warning lights on your dash. Generally when these units leak it will be slow at first, then get worse over time.
The easiest way to determine if your water pump / thermostat housing is leaking is to inspect under your vehicle. This part is located at the front of the engine, centered from left to right. If you have a small puddle under the front of your engine, and you vehicle is listed on the application data below, this part is the most likely cause.
